Car tax regulation must respect European Court of Justice decision
The future car tax on first registrations will have to respect the decisions of the international institutions, Minister of Public Finance Gheorghe Ialomitianu said.
„There are several variants (of the car tax – editor’s note). The Ministry of Environment must unveil the best alternative, with the final decision being taken in the Government. In my opinion, the most important thing for Romania is to take a decision in line with the ruling of the European Court of Justice. Romania must respect the decisions made by the international organizations. Different impact analyses are being drawn up. Romania ensures sources for compensations that can be spread out,” Ialomitianu said.
Last week, the Romanian Government announced to modify its car tax on first registrations in line with the decision of the European Court of Justice, with these changes most likely to be adopted in this week”s meeting.
One month ago, the European Court of Justice ruled that the pollution tax levied by the Romanian Government on the first registration of cars is in breach with the European law.
The Romanian Ministry of Environment insists that the decision does not concern the entire legislative act, as it offers an interpretation of some provisions therein.
