President Traian Basescu at the Cotroceni Palace on Tuesday received Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, to whom, in the beginning of the meeting, he confessed that his visit to Bucharest was, in fact, that of a friend, mentioning at the same time that he had always talked ‘at home’ about the Romanian-Italian partnership and about the fact that Italy had always supported Romania’s points of view in the European Council.
„Your visit makes us very happy, it is the visit of a friend to Bucharest. I have always talked at home about the partnership we also have in the European Council, where Italy has always supported Romania’s points of view. I am thanking you for the visit you are paying to Romania,” the Romanian Head of State said.
In his turn, the Italian Prime Minister pointed out the importance of the Romanian community in Italy and brought to mind the support and partnership between the two countries.
„Yesterday we had a very positive round of discussions. We reassured our determined action for your accession to the Schengen area this year and we also talked about the possibility of opening new job opportunities for Romanians living in Italy and we also discussed with the structures of collaboration between our police forces and judicial systems and they explicitly confirmed the matters we talked about two years ago. … We also talked about the Romanian community in Italy, the largest community, of over 1,200,000 people, all considered reliable persons, who have perfectly integrated themselves,” Berlusconi said.
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is paying an official two-day visit to Bucharest, starting on Monday, on the occasion of the second Romanian-Italian intergovernmental summit.
