Romanian gymnast Larisa Iordache took the third place in the AT & T American Cup competition, which was hosted, at the end of this week, by the Madison Square Garden in New York and counted for the first stage of the World Cup.
Iordache gained 59.33 points, being surpassed by American women Jordyn Wieber, 61.032 p, and Alexandra Raisman, 60.832 p. Victoria Moors (Canada) finished fourth, 56.365 p, and the fifth place was taken by Romanian Diana Chelaru, 56.100 p.
American Cup debut was in 1976, with the victory of Nadia Comaneci and of Bart Conner, while Dan Grecu was ranked second. Nadia managed the sole victory in this women’s competition for Romania, while for the men the sole success was scored by Romanian Marius Toba (1988).
Other podium positions for Romanians were obtained by Dan Grecu (1976), Emilia Eberle (1980), Lavinia Agache (1981), Laura Cutina (1984), Ana Maria Bican (1995), Marian Dragulescu (2004) – 2nd place and Daniela Silivas (1985) – 3rd place.
In some editions, the contest included individual apparatus competitions, and Romanians have won eight victories.
