Romanian fencer Ana Maria Branza, the current Olympic epee vice-champion, won at the Barcelona Women’s Epee Individual World Cup, as she defeated another Romanian, Simona Gherman, in the final, 15-11.
In the first round, Branza defeated Czech Marina Olexova 15-7, then French Vanessa Galantine, 15-8. She went on to beat Hungarian Emese Szasz 15-9, the same score of her win over Italian Francesca Quondamcarlo in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she defeated Chinese Sun Yujie, 10-8.
In the competition hosted by Ciudad de Barcelona, Branza won 32 points. Simona Gherman won 26 ponts. The other Romanian fencers ended as follows: Anca Maroiu, #35 (2 points); Loredana Dinu, #66, Maria Udrea, # 72; Simona Deac, #90; Cristina Raceu, #231.
In the overall women’s epee World Cup ranking, Branza is the current leader, with 165 points. Second is Italian Bianca Del Carretto, 159 points, and third is Chinese Sun Yujie, with 152 points.
