Traian Basescu: It is first time in eight years I have been prevented from completing my constitutional tasks
President Traian Basescu said that it was the first time that he had been prevented from completing his constitutional tasks.
‘I must say it is not the merriest day in my mandates as Romania’s President as it is the first time in eight years since I have been filling this position that I have been prevented from completing my constitutional tasks,’ said Basescu in a statement he made at the Cotroceni Palace.
President Traian Basescu also said that it was the first time in the post-December period (after 1989) that a Prime Minister had assumed the prerogatives of the Head of State and added that Romania was legitimately present at the European Council, but illegitimately represented.
‘I should say that it is the first time in the 22 year post-December period when a Prime Minister has assumed the prerogatives of the President without having a mandate from him. I should also say that it is an illegitimate assumption of the mandate of representing the state. … Romania is legitimately present at the European Council, but it is illegitimately represented at this European Council,’ said Traian Basescu in a statement he made at the Cotroceni Palace.
