CCR: Extending referendum voting hours from 7am till 11pm is constitutional

A decision to extend the voting hours at the referendum on impeaching President Traian Basescu from 7 a.m. till 11 p.m. is constitutional, the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) ruled on Tuesday.

„The Constitutional Court, following the deliberations, in a majority vote, denied an objection of unconstitutionality as being groundless and found the provisions of Item no. 4 of the single article (relating Art.1, item no. 52 of the Government’s emergency ordinance no.41/2012) of the Law on the approval of the Government’s emergency ordinance no. 41/2012 on modifying and completing Law no. 3/2000 on the organisation and conduct of the referendum are constitutional. The ruling is final and it is to be communicated the President of Romania„, the CCR said in a release to Agerpres.

The Court met in a plenary sitting to settle such objection of non-constitutionality raised by 63 deputies of the opposition Democratic Liberal Party.
