Foreign Ministry welcomes mandate extension of NATO Secretary General Rasmussen

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the extension by one year, until July 31, 2014, of the mandate of current Secretary General of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, according to a release sent on Wednesday by the MAE.

„The Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed on this occasion congratulations to Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen and reiterated its appreciation for his efforts to promote and effectively implement the missions and objectives of the North Atlantic Alliance, for convening the New Strategic Concept of the North Atlantic Alliance, as well as for the continuation of the process of transformation of NATO”, reads the release.

MAE reiterated Romania’s support to the efforts of the Secretary General for the purpose of sustaining NATO operational commitment, development of partnership relations and adaptation of the Alliance to the security challenges of the 21st century, including by the active promotion of topics of interest such as missile defense, cyber security and energy.

The decision to extend Rasmussen’s mandate was adopted on Wednesday by consensus, by the allies, following the consultation process initiated and coordinated by the Permanent Representative of Romania to NATO, as dean of the North Atlantic Council.
