Speaker of Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea said on Thursday that Romania’s representatives make lobby in the UK so as to persuade the British leaders and MPs to lift the labour restrictions for Romanians by the end of next year at the latest.
„We are striving at the moment to make a consistent lobby around the leaders of the UK and its MPs to accept the lift of labour restrictions for Romanian citizens. That means we want to persuade both Spain and the UK this year and next year to lift the restrictions. This is a positive signal regarding our commitment, and the British told us they are considering this matter, and that there is pressure in the UK regarding recession,” said Zgonea during the conference „Modern slavery, the impact of human trafficking for labour exploitation in Europe,” and event held by the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Bucharest and the International Organisation for Migration, the Mission in Romania.
Zgonea added that he would pay an official visit to the UK in November.
According to him, the Romanians in the UK are held in high regard by the British, a fact proved by a report of the Parliament in London revealing that 90 percent of the Romanian citizens working or living in the UK have higher education and are appreciated in their communities.
The Speaker of Chamber of Deputies said there is no official figure by now to show how many Romanians are working in the UK illegally, and that the data revealed by now are unofficial.
