President Basescu attends CELAC-EU Summit, Chile and pays visit to Peru, a first in Latin America
President Traian Basescu is to pay, from January 25 to 30, this year, a visit to Latin America, where he will attend the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) – European Union (EU ), in Santiago de Chile (Republic of Chile), and will pay an official visit to the Republic of Peru.
According to a release of the Presidential Administration, CELAC-EU Summit is taking place from January 25 to 28, and the official visit of the head of stat to Peru is scheduled on January 28 and 29.
The Presidential Administration also informs that this is the first visit, as head of state, of Traian Basescu to Latin America.
„The CELAC – EU Summit, the seventh edition, takes place in a political and economic context a lot different compared to that of the launch of the EU – Latin America and the Caribbean partnership. The summit this year is focused on investments as an important pillar of CELAC – EU partnership, the European Union being the largest investor in the region „, the Presidential Administration also informs.
The summit will primarily deal with talks on promotion of investments in a sustainable development of local communities, exploring the possibilities of developing CELAC – EU dialogue in the matter of best investment practice and of the corporate sector social responsibility (CSR), encouraging consolidation of the Investment Facility in Latin America, but also the new EU – Caribbean Strategy and the establishment of specific facilities set to sustain investments in the Caribbean.
„As concerns the bilateral relations between Romania and the Republic of Chile, after 1989 there were two visits at the level of the head of state, first in 1993, by President Ion Iliescu and the second in 2004, when President Ricardo Lagos Escobar visited Romania „, the press release of the Presidential Administration reads.
As far as the official visit to Peru is concerned, the Presidential Administration says it is the second visit paid by the head of the Romanian state to this country, with a previous one in 1973.
„The President of the Republic of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, visited Romania in 1998, and President Alejandro Toledo launched an invitation, since 2006 still, to President Traian Basescu, to pay a visit to his country. Primary purpose of this diplomatic approach aims at re-launching the political and diplomatic dialogue, the Republic of Peru being one of the most dynamic economies in Latin America ” the release further reads.
The agenda of discussions includes official talks between President Traian Basescu and his Peru counterpart, Ollanta Moises Humala Tasso, as well as meetings with the President of Peruvian Congress, Victor Isla Rojas, and the Mayor of Lima, Susana Villaran de la Puente.
The Presidential Administration also says that the official delegation accompanying President Basescu in this visit to Latin America is formed of Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean, five head of state’s advisers, Romanian Ambassador to Chile Florin-Angelo Florian, Charge d’affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Peru, Stefan Nicolae, as well as representatives of the Protocol Department of the Presidential Administration and of the Service of guard and protection.
