President Traian Basescu said on Tuesday, in Lima, that Romania is interested in railway development projects initiated in Peru, adding that there are also discussions on procurement of military ships from our country.
„Romania is a country with advanced technology in many areas and our wish is that, in the framework of a political decision, Romanian and Peruvian companies to undertake joint ventures in Peru, by which to produce railway cars, whether freight , or passenger, metro trains, equipment for various industries, last and not least, the construction of micro hydro-power stations, a field in which Romania has many and very good years of experience. (…) We want to participate in railway development projects, under way in Peru and in the region, and we see Peru as a partner country, with whom to develop industrial and commercial relations with several other countries in Latin America „, Basescu said in the joint press declaration with his Peruvian counterpart, Ollanta Humala Tasso.
In this context, he said that Romania is a country that has a „great tradition” in producing petroleum equipment, either fixed or mobile, for land mining or for sea drilling platforms.
„We are a powerful shipbuilder, Romania being one of suppliers of commercial and military ships, built for other countries. I am referring here to military ships for the Netherlands, for instance, and the most sophisticated commercial ships for many shipowners in the world”, President Basescu added.
Asked about talks regarding a possible purchase by Peru of military ships from Romania, the two heads of state said there are ongoing discussions on this topic.
Ollanta Humala Tasso noted that Romania has progressed much in terms of defense technology, adding that Peru has relations of cooperation in this field with several countries and wants to have such relations with Romania, as well.
„Romania, producing ships for the Netherlands, there was already a first discussion with a mission visiting Peru in 2012 and discussions are continuing to also cooperate in this direction”, President Basescu also said.
President of the Republic of Peru stressed that the two countries have „complementary” economies.
„We want to work together in several areas, including in the shipbuilding field”, Peru’s head of state highlighted.
The two heads of state also discussed, among other topics, the issue of cooperation in the field of combating drug trafficking, Traian Basescu pointing out that this issue is important, being known that the „drugs route” often starts in Latin America, reaching the Black Sea zone, from where it enters the EU market.
