Romania meets specific requirements to join Schengen, European Commission says

The European Commission continues to believe that Romania meets the specific requirements to join Schengen Space, Commission spokesman Mark Gray said.

He stressed the additional report on the progress made by Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), which he unveiled at a media briefing on Wednesday, deals with Bucharest’s meeting the CVM requirements and the Schengen issue is not within the scope of that document.

When asked when will the European Union member states make a decision on Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Schengen entry, Michele Cercone, the spokesperson for Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom, answered this thing cannot be foreseen at this moment, but he stressed a JHA Council meeting had drawn the conclusion the two countries are technically ready to join Schengen.
