Constitution revision – discussed by Chamber of Deputies Speaker with Secretary General of Council of Europe
The internal developments in Romania, with a focus on the revision of the Constitution, change of the electoral laws and parliamentary reform was discussed, on Wednesday, in a meeting between the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Valeriu Zgonea, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorborn Jagland.
The Chamber of Deputies Speaker reaffirmed the Romanian side’s full willingness to take over from the European experience and good practices on these issues, the Chamber of Deputies informs in a release .
„We are determined to cooperate with the Council of Europe on the implementation of the Venice Commission’s recommendations, adopted last December. Most recommendations are relevant for a series of domestic reforms, envisaged by the Governmental coalition and whose implementation is already under way”, Zgonea said.
The Chamber of Deputies Speaker informed the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the stage of the process of changing the Constitution and the electoral laws.
„The two sides have also approached aspects pertaining to the parliamentary reform in Romania. In this respect, Valeriu Zgonea stressed the need for implementation in the next period of a Code of Conduct for the Members of Parliament, in line with the European model”, the quoted source also informs.
