First sweets for diabetics, made in Timisoara

A group of researchers from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat (USAMVB) in Timisoara, headed by Prof. Dr. Ersilia Alexa, produced ten special food for those who have gluten intolerance and for diabetics: cakes, the most interesting being the one with sea buckthorn fruit, biscuits with low carbohydrate content, special pasta.

For children a nutritive premix was made with lentils and sea buckthorn fruit, having a good iron content.

About the products awarded at the Inventions Salon at Cluj-Napoca, but also about to what extent the vegetables are healthy or dangerous to human health, Prof. Dr. Ersilia Alexe spoke in an interview given to AGERPRES. The products have already been successfully tested in the Pediatric clinic in Timisoara, the beneficial results being already visible.

The innovative products are the result of research activity developed at the Faculty of Food Technology of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Banat Timisoara and funded via research projects. Dietary flour foods were obtained under the Makis project, headlined the „Implementation of modern technologies for obtaining diet flour foods”, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and the World Bank in 2008-2011.

The project was aimed at obtaining some diet flour foods of the following categories: agglutinate products based on premixes, bakery products, biscuits for people with gluten intolerance (celiac disease), low carbohydrate products, premixes, bakery products, biscuits, which are for people with metabolic disorders (PKU), low carbohydrate products for diabetics. We have here infant formulas and baby foods, based on processed cereals, with and without the addition of fruits and vegetables. Then, there are products enriched with iron, designed especially for people suffering from anemia and pasta for the elderly.

The product awarded at the Invention Salon in Cluj is the low carbohydrate fruit cake, produced with a low carbohydrate index and with a high nutritional value, for persons suffering from diabetes.

„Studies show that, in Romania, 68 percent of the population never consumes breakfast cereals, while 23 percent have never heard of cereals and their beneficial effects. In comparison, a Romanian consumes on average 280 grams of cereals per year, while a European consumes 2 to 9 kg of cereals per year „, Professor Alexa explained.

Dietetic foods are intended for people with different diseases, diabetes, gluten intolerance, metabolic disorders, as well as to the healthy ones, but with some special food needs: infants, pregnant women, athletes, overweight.

Organic farming without chemical treatments in culture leads to obtaining organic food without pesticides.

Given that, in the conditions of environmentally sustainable agriculture without fungicides, proliferation of fungi and mycotoxin contamination can not be controlled, I consider that the presence of mycotoxins in plant products represents a major health risk to consumers, Professor Ersilia Alexa also said.
