Parliament passes MPs’ statutes
The Chamber of Deputies and the Senate on Monday convened in an extraordinary joint session to approve a reexamination of the statutes of the MPs in both chambers that accommodates the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR).
The decision passed 391 to 1.
Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea said he has the agreement of all the parliamentary political forces on the unanimous passage of the amendments to the statutes.
The judiciary committees of Parliament and a select committee on the statutes on Monday decided to discard from the MPs’ statutes the provisions the Constitutional Court has ruled unconstitutional. Thus, the three committees decided to repeal Article 24 (1) and (2) providing for the remand of MPs in case of flagrant offences as well as the procedure when there is a request for the start of criminal investigation of a member of the Government that is also an MP.
