The weight of state-owned enterprises per total turnover was approximately 5 percent in 2012, they operating mainly in energy and transport sectors, said State secretary in the Ministry of Economy (ME) Bogdan Badea on the occasion of the informal meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council, in Vilnius.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Economy, State Secretary Bogdan Badea, coordinator of mineral resources and defense industry fields, participated, from July 22 to 23, in Vilnius, in the informal meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council.

The participants had an exchange of views on modernization of public administration, contribution of state enterprises (IS) to growth and competitiveness, the manner in which the public administration responds to SMEs needs, applying the „Think Small First” principle and intelligent public acquisitions.

In his address, the Romanian official referred to the issue of state enterprises, emphasizing that they work in a wide range of areas, particularly utilities and public services, their involvement degree in the economy differing from country to country. In Romania, in 2012, the weight of SOEs per total turnover was approximately 5 percent, they operating mainly in the energy and transport sectors.

The Secretary of State also said that, at the national level, the main problem faced by SOEs is represented by accumulation of arrears and that the agreements concluded by Romania with the EU and international financial institutions led to a substantial improvement of their performance. He also informed that the main measures taken by Romania have been focused on the introduction of a professional management and sale of minority/majority share packages on the capital market.

Referring to the introduction of a professional management, the Romanian official stressed that it is in compliance with the OECD guidelines on Corporate Governance of SOEs.

Finally, Badea said that, if well managed, the state-owned enterprises could contribute to economic growth, job creation and sustainability of public finances.

The meeting, attended by representatives of economic ministries in the Member States was coordinated by the Lithuanian Minister of Economy, Evaldas Gustas and the European Commission was represented by its Vice President Antonio Tajani, Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship, as well as by the Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier.(National News Agency AGERPRES)
