Bucharest plans to achieve, in the upcoming period, a number of political contacts with the U.S. officials, set to contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral strategic partnership, said on Thursday, in a press conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean.
„I can tell you that, in the upcoming period, we plan to materialize, in a most efficient way in political terms, the agenda of political contacts, both in Washington, and in Bucharest, which will contribute to the deepening and expanding the bilateral strategic partnership. Details will be provided at the respective time”, Corlatean said.
He stressed that Romania is keen to be included in the Visa Waver program and cooperates with the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest to this end.
„For us, equally, visas remain an extremely important issue and here we have acted consistently, including through the specialized working structure we have organized at the level of the Foreign Ministry and of the U.S. Embassy, that working group which, inter alia, has also run a series of public information campaigns aimed at Romanian citizens, referring to how they must fill in the application requests, so that to reduce the number of visa refusals – this being a very important criterion”, Titus Corlatean emphasized.
He also informed that Romania recently supported the European Commission mandate to conclude a free trade agreement with the U.S.A.
„Romania is a staunch supporter of the transatlantic partnership between the EU and the U.S.A.: politically, strategically, economically and culturally. Romania supported the recent adoption of the mandate of the European Commission to conclude a Free Trade Agreement with the U.S.A. It’s an agreement that, once finalized, will be considered an historic agreement, which could change the global economic parameters. For us, the relationship with the U.S.A. is materialized in a strategic partnership which represents the cornerstone of our European and Euro-Atlantic profile and we acted consistently on this line on political, strategic matters – the missile defense shield in the framework of the North Atlantic Alliance, international security issues – in operations in Afghanistan „, said the chief of Romanian diplomacy.
