Romania’s Permanent representative to BSEC Stefana Greavu told that the basic topics debated during the sixth session of the Working group, with the participation of nine states’ representatives, refer to defining and detailing the Motorways of the Sea concept – in line with the European one, the establishment of some institutional structures for the development and extension of the pan-European economic projects to the Black Sea basin, as well as the advancement of proposals for the setting up of a permanent secretariat of the Working group for the development of Motorways of the Sea.
Turkey, Russia and Romania forwarded their candidacy to host and organize the Working group’s permanent secretariat, with Constanta as its location, but for the time being discussions are carried out just at expert level, to be followed by a subsequent decision.
Most significant for us is the currently debated topics, namely Romania and Serbia proposal to extend the concept of Motorways of the Sea at the level of interior navigable channels and canals, as the Danube or the Danube – Black Sea Canal, with Poarta Alba – Midia Navodari alternative”, stressed Stefana Greavu.
The document establishing the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) was signed on June 25, 1992, in Istanbul, by the heads of state and of government of 11 countries – Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine.
BSEC main objectives are the speeding up of the economic and social development of the member states in the prospect of their integration in the European Union, intensification of multilateral cooperation and use of advantages derived from their geographical proximity and complementarity of their national economies.
BSEC priority cooperation domains are the projects in the regional development field, the most important referring to the inter-connection of the power grids and their connection to the Western European systems, the development of transport infrastructure by extension towards the East of the big European thoroughfares, construction of some oil and natural gas pipelines and modernization and inter-connection of the communication systems that got under way.
