The railway carriers operating under the authority of the Transport Ministry (MTI) have been mandated to lay off between 10,000 and 13,000 employees by the end of 2010, according to information released by trade union and MTI officials.
The lay-offs concern the loss-making corporations and will affect the CFR Calatori national passenger railway carrier, where nearly 4,000 people will lose their jobs, the CFR Marfa national freight rail carrier – 5,000 people to be made redundant, as well as the central offices and subordinate divisions – car checking and repairing department – including 2,900 CFR SA workers and 1,000 employees of Electrificare SA.
