Total number of tourists stood at 4.317 million, down 12.9 percent from the first eight months in 2008, of whom 3.456 million Romanian tourists, a 12 percent drop. Romanian tourists arrivals in tourist accommodation structures accounted for 80 percent of the total arrivals number, whereas foreign tourists accounted for 20 percent of the total number of arrivals, a closer weight to Jan. – Aug. 2008.
Hotel arrivals accounted for 73.2 percent of the total of arrivals in tourist accommodation structures compared to 73.4 percent over Jan. – Aug. 2008.
Foreign visitors’ arrivals in Romania, registered at the cross-border points, stood over the examined period at 5.195 million, a drop of 14.7 percent from the corresponding period last year. Foreign visitors come in their majority from the countries in Europe – 94.9 percent, of whom 63 percent from the EU.
The highest number of arrivals are from Hungary (37.2 percent), Bulgaria (18.4 percent), Germany (9.3 percent) and Italy (7.7 percent).
Naval transport showed the steepest decline – 26.6 percent – in the examined period compared to the corresponding period the previous year.
Romanian visitors’ departures abroad, as registered at the cross-border points, stood at 8.17 million, down 7.9 percent. Romanian visitors abroad preferred road transport means – 80.2 percent of the total number of departures.
