Snow over 2.5 m. deep and considerable avalanche risk in Fagaras

The Avalanche risk in the Fagaras Massif (north of Bucharest) is considerable, even high, here and there, because the snow layer is over 2.5 meters thick in the Balea Lake area – Cote 2,000, the Mountain Rescue Service (SPS) in Arges (138 miles northwest of Bucharest) informed on Tuesday.

At heights of over 1,800 meters, the avalanche risk is rather high, (3rd level of five), but in certain areas where the gale made snow deposits, the risk might be much higher than expected, SPS Arges manager Ion Sanduloiu said.
The mountain rescuers of the area warn that the main ridge route and the hiking paths leading to the Fagaras Massif’s crest continue to be closed, irrespective of the altitude.
