German groups control 60 pct of Romania’s retail trade

The German Lidl & Schwarz group outran the French Carrefour retailer in the ranking of the top biggest retailers on the local market once it took over the Plus discounter network, reads the Ziarul Financiar daily.

Following the integration of the 96 acquired stores, Lidl & Schwarz group, which also operates a network of 45 Kaufland hypermarkets will reach a turnover assessed by the above mentioned publication at 1.3 billion euros in Romania. On comparison, Carrefour that controls 23 hypermarkets and 25 operational supermarkets posted some 1.13 billion euros in last year’s turnover.

The top three retailers in Romania are at present only German groups, Metro (with Real and Metro Cash & Carry), Rewe (with Selgros, Billa and Penny Market) and Lidl & Schwarz, which collectively control over 60 percent of the modern food retail, a market estimated at nearly 8 billion euros at the end of 2009.
