ForMin participates in VI EU-Latin America Summit

Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi participated in the Sixth EU-Latin America (LAC) Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Madrid on Tuesday, where leaders of European and of Latin American states analysed the main world challenges that affect both regions, with special emphasis on strategies to get out of the ongoing world economic and financial crisis and climate change.

According to a release issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the high level meeting represented an opportunity for coordinating European and Latin American states’ actions, given the shared common values: democracy, social justice, respect for human fundamental rights and freedoms, multilateral bodies cooperation, fulfilment of Millennium Development Objectives.

The European Union and the Latin American and Caribbean states agreed to consolidate cooperation at the level of multilateral bodies on major topics on the international agenda – climate change and the international financial system. At the same time, EU’s solidarity commitment with Haiti and Chile was reconfirmed as regards the reconstruction after the natural disasters that affected both countries, says MAE. A Madrid Declaration, an Action Plan and Terms of Reference for the EU-LAC Foundation were adopted at the EU-LAC summit.
