Seven companies keen to buy first two DVB-Ts

The National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) announced, in a press release on Monday that seven companies received the specifications books put up for sale, over July 1-7, for the selection procedures for the purchase of the first two digital terrestrial television multiplexes (DVB-T).

ANCOM list includes companies such as S.C. RCS & RDS S.A., S.C. Romtelecom S.A., TDF S.A.S., the Media Sat S.R.L. National Radio-communications Company, the Österreichische Rundfunksender GmbH & Co KG (ORS) and General Satellite Sofia. According to the selection procedure’s agenda, the deadline for lodging the biddings is Aug 31 for both multiplexes, and the winners are to be nominated on Sept 28, 2010 for the first, and on Oct 8, 2010 for the second one.

Romania committed itself to the European Union (EU) to complete the switch to the digital television by 2012, but the authorities failed observing the deadline they were imposed on. ‘    The first deadline the EU Treaty imposed for the transition to the digital terrestrial television was end 2009.

The strategy of switching to the digital broadcasting stipulates that six multiplexes shall be granted, two at the beginning, able to work along with the analogue television and the other four due to become operational, later. About 1.44 million people, only, watch TV by digital terrestrial aerials, while there are round 3.6 million cable TV subscribers, and the DTH – DigiTV, FocusSat, Max TV, Boom TV and Dolce platforms number 1.98 users, in Romania, so far.
